A strange gas map from Paraguay

July 2, 2007

Of all the gas maps I’ve seen during my time, this one below of Paraguay is one of the strangest. One of the first questions that arise is why would Paraguay need gas if it has more power than it can consume? The Itaipú hydropower installation is jointly operated with Brazil and Yacyretá with Argentina.

Such pipeline projects below will never get built for two main reasons: there’s not a market for gas in Paraguay; it’s too costly to build infrastructure like pipelines; and the absence of a good gas law that would give guarantees to foreign energy companies.

So in the meantime click on the gas map of Paraguay and feast your eyes on the incredulous.
